LANtastic Z(TM) Serial/Parallel Local Area Network Interconnect two PCs and enjoy all the features of a full-powered LAN without interface cards. LANtastic Z doesn't need network cards. It lets you com- municate via existing serial or parallel ports on each PC, the same ports used to connect printers and modems. And whereas many "serial" or "zero-slot" LANs are just glorified file transfer programs that tie up your PCs while data is going back and forth, LANtastic Z is a true network. In fact, it's the same full-featured software that normally ships with Artisoft's LAN hardware, such as LANtastic 2Mbps and Ethernet adapters. Not only does LANtastic Z let you use your PC while the network works in the background, but it also gives you many more features than most other serial LAN products. No wonder PC Magazine gave LANtastic Z an Editors' Choice when it reviewed zero-slot LANs. "LANtastic Z manages to incorporate a full set of features -- including excel -lent printer control, powerful E-mail, and good security -- in under 40K of RAM." "If you need real networking for two... stations, this is the one to choose." PC Magazine, April 24, 1990 LANtastic Z's installation program will have you up and running in minutes. LANtastic Z software comes on one diskette accompanied by a step-by-step user's manual. And LANtastic Z's install program automatically installs most of the network software. Modem Support permits remote access. Use your modem at home to remotely access a computer at your office. With LANtastic Z, your PC at home can share all the office computer's resources -- files, programs, printers, a CD-ROM and more. Connect a laptop to a network server. By using LANtastic Z to connect a laptop computer to the serial or parallel port on a desktop computer, the laptop can access all the desktop's re- sources, such as files, programs, and printers. Share programs. With LANtastic Z, you just load a program into one PC and both can access it. Share printers. No more carrying a disk to the PC which has your printer attached to it. With LANtastic Z, you simply print directly to any network printer. And LANtastic Z not only supports multiple printers per server, but will automatically despool to two or more printers simultaneously. Share a CD-ROM. LANtastic Z lets you share a CD-ROM that uses Microsoft CD-ROM extensions. And with LANtastic Z, the Microsoft CD-ROM extension software resides only on the computer to which the CD-ROM is attached, not on both. Protect against unauthorized access. LANtastic Z offers several levels of security. Username with password. And Access Control Lists which define user access with the following access types: Read, Write, Create, Delete and Rename files, Make, Delete and Lookup Directories, Execute programs, and Change file attributes. You can limit a user's access to certain hours during the day. Use easy-to-follow "audit trails" for accounting and billing. LANtastic Z's audit file capability lets you monitor all access to sub- directories and printers. This means you can know who used a PC, printer or other device, when they used it, and how long they used it. You also know if someone attempts to enter "locked" directories. Or exactly how many char- acters a printer printed. LANtastic Z can audit access of the items defined in the printer sharing section above whether allowed or denied. The name of the user and the computer he was using, as well as the time an operation was performed, is logged to the server. Chat and send electronic mail. With LANtastic Z's "Chat" feature, one PC can send a message to the other PC, and the message will be instantly displayed on the other PC's monitor. The other PC can give an instant reply -- just like a conversation. LANtastic Z also has a built-in text editor that makes sending small messages simple. Binary files such as programs or databases can also be sent. Take advantage of LANtastic Z's small memory requirement. Since LANtastic Z uses a small amount of memory, you don't have to buy extra memory to run it. Programs will still run just like they do now. LANtastic Z is compatible with DOS 3.1 and above, and supports DOS 3.1 file and record locking. Since almost all common software programs use DOS, the way they operate on your computers will not change after you install LANtastic Z. Run other NetBIOS-compatible programs. Netbios is an industry standard software interface that gives LAN appli- cations programs access to computer hardware. It is the most widely used interface in PC networking. Hundreds of network applications use it. Because LANtastic Z is NetBIOS-compatible, you can run hundreds of other NetBIOS - compatible applications programs on your LANtastic Z network. For example, you could run Artisoft's The Network Eye(C), which will enable you to control the keyboards and view the screens of both of your network Pcs using just a single PC. LANtastic Z gives you everything you need to link two IBMs or compatibles. LANtastic Z comes with two cables. You choose one of them - either the serial port cable or the parallel port cable. The LANtastic Z network kit also con- tains a step-by-step LANtastic Network Operating System user's manual, and software on both a 5.25" and a 3.5" disk. Specifications.
